Raise boring tools and systems

Sandvik raise-boring heads optimize the performance of the boring machine by having high penetration rates, great stability, low vibration and low torque demands. Together with our high-performance pilot bits, they enable shafts and holes from 0.66 to 6.0 meters in diameter to be bored to depths (or lengths) of up to 1000 meters quickly, economically and safely. Sandvik raise-boring heads are quick to assemble, have low maintenance demands and give very long service life.

  • Pilot bits

Sandvik pilot bits, made especially for raise boring, are of the roller-cone type with cemented tungsten-carbide buttons and sealed bearings. Intended for use with water flushing, they are designed for long holes and a wide range of rock conditions, making them the best possible insurance against bit-related trip-outs.

  • Blind hole heads

Sandvik blind hole (boxhole) boring heads are designed to bore upward, with or without a pre-drilled pilot hole, to produce slot raises, ore passes etc. where there is no access to the upper level. The head is always guided and stabilized frontally, aided by rear stabilizers in the drillstring under the head.

  • Down boring heads

Sandvik down-reamers are designed to bore downward, guided frontally in a pre-drilled pilot hole that leads to an existing opening. They are used mainly in cut-and-fill mining operations to bore passages into mined-out stopes, which are then filled with waste material. However, down-reamers can be an option wherever it is impossible, impractical or not safe to mount the reaming head from below.

  • Reaming heads

All Sandvik reaming heads consist of a base unit, to which various components are bolted. The type, number, combination and configuration of components can be tailored to the demands of the application. The head structure of smaller reamers is usually integral, while that of larger units can be integral, segmented and extendable to various sizes. This makes them very versatile, easy to transport and easy to reuse on other projects, keeping capital investment to a minimum.
